The Beast from the Sea

1 And the dragon stood on the sand of the ^{▼▼ Lit sea}seashore.

Then I saw a ^bbeast coming up out of the sea, having ^cten horns and ^dseven heads, and on his horns were ^eten diadems, and on his heads were ^fblasphemous names. 2 And the beast which I saw was ^glike a leopard, and his feet were like those of ^ha bear, and his mouth like the mouth of ⁱa lion. And the ^jdragon gave him his power and his ^kthrone and great authority. 3 I saw one of his heads as if it had been ^{▼▼ Lit slaughtered to death}slain, and his ^mfatal wound was healed. And the whole earth ⁿwas amazed and followed after the beast; 4 they worshiped the ^odragon because he ^pgave his authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, ^q“Who is like the beast, and who is able to wage war with him?” 5 There was given to him a mouth ^rspeaking ^{▼▼ Lit great things}arrogant words and blasphemies, and authority to act for ^tforty-two months was given to him. 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, ^uthose who ^{▼▼ Or tabernacle}dwell in heaven.

7 It was also given to him to ^wmake war with the ^{▼▼ Or holy ones}saints and to overcome them, and authority over ^yevery tribe and people and tongue and nation was given to him. 8 All who ^zdwell on the earth will worship him, everyone ^aawhose name has not been ^{▼▼ Or written in the book...slain from the foundation of the world}written ^acfrom the foundation of the world in the ^adbook of life of ^aethe Lamb who has been slain. 9 ^afIf anyone has an ear, let him hear. 10 ^agIf anyone ^{▼▼ Or leads into captivity} is destined for captivity, to captivity he goes; ^aiif anyone kills with the sword, with the sword he must be killed. Here is ^ajthe ^{▼▼ Or steadfastness}perseverance and the faith of the ^{▼▼ Or holy ones}saints.

The Beast from the Earth

11 Then ^amI saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had ^antwo horns like a lamb and he spoke as a ^aodragon. 12 He ^apexercises all the authority of the first beast ^{▼▼ Or by his authority

And he makes ^asthe earth and those who dwell in it to ^atworship the first beast, whose ^aufatal wound was healed. 13 He ^avperforms great signs, so that he even makes ^awfire come down out of heaven to the earth in the presence of men. 14 And he ^axdeceives ^aythose who dwell on the earth because of ^azthe signs which it was given him to perform ^{▼▼ Or by the authority of
,} ^bbin the presence of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who had the ^bcwound of the sword and has come to life. 15 And it was given to him to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast would even ^{▼▼ One early ms reads speak, and he will cause}speak and cause ^beas many as do not ^bfworship the image of the beast to be killed. 16 And he causes all, ^bgthe small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free men and the slaves, ^{▼▼ Lit causes all,...that they give them a mark}to be given a ^bimark on their right hand or on their forehead, 17 and he provides that no one will be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the ^bjmark, either ^bkthe name of the beast or ^blthe number of his name. 18 ^bmHere is wisdom.
